Aluminum
Aluminum 2014
Aging Procedure
Not applicable. The clad alloys are used in the "as supplied" condition.
Annealing Procedure
Annealing should be avoided for the same reason as avoiding hot work. Exposure to higher temperatures can cause diffusion of the clad and core alloys thus disturbing the beneficial effects of the cladding.
Applications
Commonly used in the manufacture of aircraft structures, and truck frames.
Cold Workability
Al Clad 2014 cold works as AL 2014. Consult AL 2014 for comments on cold working.
Forgeability
No data. Really not applicable to clad alloy.
Formability
Forming characteristics are the same as for AL 2014 alloy.
Hardening Procedure
Hardens by cold working. Al Clad alloys should not be heat treated from the "as received" condition.
Heat Treatability
Heat treatment is based upon the core material AL 2014.
Hot Workability
Hot working should be avoided as it can result in diffusion of the clad and core alloys and thus disturb the intended effect of the cladding.
Machinability
Machinability is same as for AL 2014.
Other Comments
AL Clad 2014 is typically clad on both sides with AL 6003. The cladding thickness ranges from 3 to 10% of the entire clad composite thickness.
Other Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties are determined by the core material, in this instance AL 2014.
Other Physical Properties
Physical properties such as expansion, melt point, density, etc. are basically the same as for the core material in AL Clad alloys. In this case the properties of AL 2014 are applicable.
Principle Design Features
Al Clad 2014 consists of a core material of alloy AL 2014, clad on both sides with AL 6003 alloy for anodic corrosion protection of the core material.
Tempering Procedure
Not applicable.
Weldability
Welding characteristics are the same as for AL 2014 alloy. It should be noted that welding will cause diffusion of the cladding into the core alloy and thus change the corrosion protection at the location of a weld.
