Aluminum 4032

Aging Procedure

The alloy may be aged (T6 temper) by first solution heating at 950 F and cold water quenching, followed by a 340 F heating for 10 hours and air cooling.

Annealing Procedure

Annealing may be done at 775 F for adequate time for thorough heating, followed by controlled cooling at rate of 50 F per hour to 400 F then air cool.

Applications

Commonly used in the manufacture of pistons.

Cold Workability

No data. This alloy is typically hot forged, not cold worked.

Forgeability

This is a forging alloy and hot die forging is done at temperatures in the range of 950 F to 700 F.

Formability

This is basically a forging alloy and forming is done by hot die forging.

Hardening Procedure

See "Aging".

Heat Treatability

Solution heat treatment is done at 950 F for 1 to 12 hours, depending upon section thickness. Cold water quench.

Hot Workability

The same comments as for "Forging" apply to hot working. That is hot work in the range of 950 F to 700 F.

Machinability

Machinability of AL 4032 is fair to good. Use of lubricating oils during machining is recommended.

Other Mechanical Properties

Shear strength for the T6 condition is 38 ksi at room temperature.

Other Physical Properties

Electrical conductivity 33% of copper.

Principle Design Features

Brazing sheet and strip

Tempering Procedure

Not applicable

Weldability

The alloy is weldable and use of inert-gas arc welding is the preferred method . Gas welding should be avoided.
