Aluminum 5050

Aging Procedure

Not applicable to this alloy.

Annealing Procedure

Annealing, id required because of extensive cold working, may be done at 650 F followed by air cooling.

Applications

Is commonly used in the manufacture of refrigerator trim, coiled tubes, and builder's hardware.

Cold Workability

Cold working characteristics are very good, especially in the annealed temper. Bend radii of zero to 1/2 thickness are possible for sheet material up to 1/8" thick.

Forgeability

No data, although the alloy is considered forgeable - consult the alloy supplier.

Formability

The best formability results are obtained in the annealed or H32 tempers. The alloy may still be formed, but with somewhat more difficulty, in the harder cold worked conditions.

Hardening Procedure

Cold working will harden this alloy to the various H tempers, depending upon the degree (or amount) of cold worked strain imparted.

Heat Treatability

This all is not heat treatable.

Hot Workability

The alloy can be hot worked in the temperature range of 700 to 400 F.

Machinability

The overall machinability of this alloy is considered as fair, especially in the annealed condition. In the cold worked conditions the machinability is improved over that of the annealed material. Use of proper lubricants during machining is advised.

Other Mechanical Properties

Shear strength values for AL 5050 are: O temper 15 ksi. H32 temper 17 ksi. H36 Temper 19 ksi.

Other Physical Properties

Electrical conductivity 49% of copper.

Principle Design Features

AL 5050 is noted for its very good corrosion resistance and good workability properties. It is a non-heat treatable alloy.

Tempering Procedure

Not applicable.

Weldability

All of the commercial welding methods may be used satisfactorily with this alloy. Brazing, after experimental trials to develop parameters, is also possible.
