Aging Procedure

Not applicable to this alloy.

Annealing Procedure

Annealing, if required, can be done at 650 F followed by air cooling.

Applications

Commonly used in the manufacture of appliance and automotive trim.

Cold Workability

AL 5252 readily cold works by conventional methods. It is well suited to cold forming by drawing, blanking or bending.

Forgeability

The alloy may be forged in the temperature range of 950 to 700 F.

Formability

The formability, both cold and hot, of this alloy is excellent.

Hardening Procedure

Cold working will cause hardening (strengthening) of this alloy to the H tempers. It cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Heat Treatability

AL 5252 does not respond to heat treatment, other than annealing to relieve cold working strain - see "Annealing".

Hot Workability

Hot working, if necessary, may be readily accomplished in the range of 900 to 500 F.

Machinability

The machinability of AL 5252 is relatively poor as compared to the other aluminum alloys. The tendency to be "gummy" makes it difficult to obtain a good finish. Use of lubricants during machining is advised.

Other Mechanical Properties

Shear strength of H25 or H28, H38 material is 21 to 23 ksi.

Other Physical Properties

Electrical conductivity 35% of copper.

Principle Design Features

This is a non-heat treatable alloy of aluminum and magnesium. Although of medium strength the alloy does have excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance as well as ease of fabrication.

Tempering Procedure

Not applicable.

Weldability

All of the commercial welding methods may be utilized for this alloy. TIG and /or MIG welding practice is preferred. Brazing is not recommended.
