Refractory Alloys Tantalum - 10% Tungsten

Not applicable.

Anneal at 2400 to 2900 F. Stress relief anneal at 1025 F.

Used in the aerospace industry for hot-gas valves, rocket engine skirts and in the chemical industry for corrosion resistant valves and liners.

The alloy may be cold worked by conventional methods without difficulty.

This alloy is attacked by hydrofluoric acid and also will oxidize in air at temperatures above 570 F. It does have excellent corrosion resistance to most acids (other than hydrofluoric) and to liquid metals.

Forge at 2200 down to 1500 F.

Conventional forming methods as spinning, bending, drawing work well with this alloy.

Hardens by cold working.

Not heat treatable. See "Annealing".

Hot working such as extrusion may be done at 3000 to 2700 F. Hot rolling, or similar working, can be done at 950 F down to 200 F.

Machining should be done using high speed steel tooling, or carbide cutting tools with water soluble oil for lubrication. The alloy machines much the same as annealed stainless steel.

Also called 90-10 tantalum, Ta-10W, or KBI-10 supplied exclusively by Cabot. This is one of the oldest and most widely used tantalum alloys.

The alloy may be welded by GTAW (gas tungsten-arc weld) electron beam, gas metal-arc welding (GMAW) and by resistance welding.
