Annealing Procedure
Soak at 2050-2100 F, water quench.
Applications
Primarily used in paper pulp, textile, and food processing equipment as well as in flue gas scrubbers and process equipment components for producing chemicals, dyestuffs, rubber, rayon, ink and bleaches.
Formability
Forming 317LM will require twice the force required of other conventional 18-8 stainless steels. Generous radii should be allowed in roll forming. The material will not snap or break easily, so it must be cut through the entire thickness.
Hardening Procedure
Hardened only through cold reduction.
Hot Workability
All common hot working processes are possible with this alloy. Heat to 2100-2300 F (1149-1260 C). Avoid working this material below 1700 F (927 C). For optimum corrosion resistance, a post-work annealing is recommended.
Machinability
Low speeds and constant feeds will minimize this alloy's tendency to work harden. Tougher than 304 stainless with a long stringy chip, the use of chip breakers is recommended.
Principle Design Features
317LM is an austenitic stainless alloy with elevated nickel content compared to 317L. This alloy was developed primarily to resist the attack of sulfuric acid compounds. The alloy combines good corrosion resistance with good mechanical properties and fabricability.
Weldability
Weldable using all conventional methods. Use 317L or Inco 625 filler material when required.
