Steel
Steel 1030
Aging Procedure
Not applicable.
Annealing Procedure
A full anneal is accomplished at 1600 to 1800 F followed by slow cooling in the furnace. a stress relief anneal may be done at 1000 F.
Applications
1030 steel is generally used in the quenched and tempered condition for strength. Applications include machinery parts where strength and hardness are requisites.
Cold Workability
Cold working of 1030 steel in the annealed condition may be don by conventional methods. A full or stress relief anneal may be needed after cold working.
Forgeability
Forge at 2300 to 1800 F.
Formability
Formability of 1030 steel in the annealed condition is good.
Hardening Procedure
Hardens by heat treatment or by cold working.
Heat Treatability
Heat treat at 1500 to 1600 F and water quench, followed by a tempering treatment.
Hot Workability
Hot work at 900 to 200 F.
Machinability
Machinabilty of 1030 steel is rated at 70 % that of the 1112 steel considered to be 100% machinable as a reference.
Principle Design Features
This is a higher carbon (0.30%) manganese steel in the plain carbon steel alloy family. It provides greater strength than the lower carbon grades while still retaining reasonable ductility.
Tempering Procedure
Temper, after heat treat and quench, at 600 to 110 F depending upon strength level desired.
Weldability
1030 steel may be welded by all methods. In heavy sections it is advisable to pre-heat at 300 to 500 F and post-heat at 1100 to 1200 F for welding.
