Steel 1075

Aging Procedure

Not applicable.

Annealing Procedure

Anneal at 1700 F and slow furnace cool.

Applications

Applications include springs and cutting tools.

Cold Workability

Cold working of 1075 is difficult even in the annealed condition. However it may be done by conventional methods but requires more force than for the low carbon steels.

Forgeability

Forge at 2200 F down to 1700 F. It is important to do an annealing operation after forging.

Formability

Forming is difficult but may be done by conventional methods.

Hardening Procedure

Hardens by cold working and heating and quenching.

Heat Treatability

This steel may be hardened by heating to 1650 F and oil quenching followed by a tempering treatment.

Hot Workability

Hot work at 900 to 200 F.

Machinability

The machinability of this steel suffers because of the high carbon content. It rates at 50% that of the 1112 steel that is considered the 100% machinable base reference.

Principle Design Features

This is one of the higher carbon steels used for high hardness in the fully hardened condition. In such condition the steel is more brittle than the lower carbon steels.

Tempering Procedure

Temper, after heating and quenching, at 700 to 1300 F. However this steel is most often used in the fully hardened condition (not tempered) of Rockwell C 55 or so.

Weldability

1075 is weldable by all of the welding techniques. However it is important to use pre-heat and post-heat practice as given in approved weld procedure, in order to avoid cracking. Pre-heat at 500 to 600 F and post-heat at 1200 to 1450 F.
