Steel
Steel 1118
Aging Procedure
Not applicable.
Annealing Procedure
Anneal at 1600 F and slow furnace cool. A stress relief anneal may be done qt 1000 F.
Applications
Used for free machining stock such as screws and fasteners.
Cold Workability
Because of the sulfur content of 1118 steel it is somewhat limited in regard to clod working. Severe cold working such as cold heading, or swaging, should be avoided as the steel tends to split or crumble due to the sulfur content.
Forgeability
No data. Generally it is not advisable to hot work high sulfur content steels. Consult the alloy supplier.
Formability
1118 is readily formed by conventional methods just as for 1018 steel.
Hardening Procedure
This steel hardens by cold working or by heat treatment and quenching.
Heat Treatability
This alloy may be hardened by heat treatment as for 1018 steel. Heat to 1550 F and quench in water, followed by a tempering treatment.
Hot Workability
No data. Generally it is not advisable to hot work sulfur containing steels. Consult the alloy supplier.
Machinability
Machinability is very good being rated at 85% that of 1112 free machining steel which is rated 100% for machinability.
Principle Design Features
This is a free machining steel to which sulfur has been purposely added to enhance machining characteristics. Otherwise it is basically similar to 1018 plain carbon steel.
Tempering Procedure
Tempering of 1118 steel may be done at 600 to 1000 F.
Weldability
1118 steel may be welded. However it is not advisable to weld the free machining (sulfur containing) steels as gases from the sulfur content may cause unsound welds.
