Aging Procedure
Not applicable to this alloy.
Annealing Procedure
Anneal at 1575 F and slow furnace cool at a rate of less than 50 F per hour down to below 900 F and air cool from there.
Cold Workability
Ductility of this alloy in the annealed or normalized condition is good. Thus it may be readily cold worked by conventional methods.
Forgeability
Forge at 2150 F down to 1800 F.
Formability
Ductility of 4815 is good and it is readily formed by conventional methods with the alloy in the annealed or normalized condition.
Hardening Procedure
4815 will harden by cold work or by heat treatment. See "Heat Treatment" and "Tempering".
Heat Treatability
Normalize at 1700 F before doing any final heat treatment. Hardening, or carburizing, is done (after normalizing) at 1700 F followed by an oil quench.
Hot Workability
No data available - consult the alloy supplier for information, or advisability, of hot working.
Machinability
As with all of the low alloy steels the 4815 alloy may be readily machined in the normalized or annealed condition. In the hardened condition machining is difficult and is best limited to grinding.
Principle Design Features
AISI 4815 is a nickel, molybdenum containing low alloy steel capable of heat treating to good core strength and ductility. it is often used for carburizing to develop a hard, wear resistant, case.
Tempering Procedure
Tempering may be done at temperatures of 300 F to 1200 F depending upon the strength level desired. Consult the alloy supplier for data on strength levels at various tempering temperatures.
Weldability
The alloy is weldable, but no details are given. Consult the alloy supplier for information as to approved welding procedures, pre and/or post-heating.
