Annealing Procedure

Anneal by heating to 1550 F followed by furnace cooling.

Applications

Commonly employed in heavily stressed machinery parts including shafts, gears, pinions and also in hand tool components.

Forgeability

Forge at 2200 F and air cool.

Heat Treatability

Harden at 1600 F and oil quench. Temper for desired properties. Normalizing can be accomplished by heating to 1650 F followed by air cooling. Typical Brinell hardness - 260.

Machinability

Machinability is rated at 59% of 12L14 carbon steel.

Principle Design Features

6150 is a fine grained, highly abrasion resistant carbon-chromium alloy steel. Very good shock resistance and toughness are also key properties of this alloy in the heat treated condition.

Weldability

This alloy, while difficult to weld, has been successfully joined with all of the common methods. Part preheating and post weld stress relieving are essential components of a successful procedure.
