Annealing Procedure

For optimum softening for machining, normalize at 1650 F and overage anneal at 1250 F for 16 hours. This should result in a Rc 40 maximum hardness.

Applications

AM 100 has been successfully employed in jet engine shafts, a variety of ordnance and ballistic components, as well as in fasteners.

Heat Treatability

Normalize by heating to 1650 F and hold for 1 hour, then air cool. For optimum softening for machining, normalize at 1650 F and overage anneal at 1250 F for 16 hours.

Machinability

Machining this alloy is considered somewhat more difficult than machining 4340 at Rc 38. Carbide tooling is recommended at 280 to 350 SFM.
