Tool Steel

Tool Steel M33

Aging Procedure

Not applicable to this alloy.

Annealing Procedure

Anneal at 1625 F and slow cool in the furnace at less than 40 F per hour.

Applications

Typically used for cutting tools of all kinds.

Cold Workability

M33 may be cold worked prior to hardening by conventional means.

Forgeability

Forge at 2050F down to 1750 F. Do not forge below 1700 F.

Formability

Forming may be accomplished by conventional means.

Hardening Procedure

See "Heat Treatment" and "Tempering".

Heat Treatability

Preheat to 1450 F then heat rapidly to 2200 - 2250 F and hold for 2 to 5 minutes. Oil, salt bath or air quenching may be used.

Hot Workability

No data - see "Forging" and consult the supplier for lower temperature working information.

Machinability

M33 is of medium machinability. It is rated at 55 to 60% that of W group water hardening low alloy tool steels that are at a base reference of 100%.

Other Comments

This tool steel is similar to the tungsten high speed tool steels, but has somewhat greater toughness and is at a lower price than the tungsten steels.

Principle Design Features

This alloy is a High Speed, molybdenum type tool steel with medium carbon and chromium and tungsten additions for strength.

Tempering Procedure

Temper at 1000 F to 1100 F for Rockwell C of 65 to 60. For best results repeat the tempering operation a second time (double temper).

Weldability

The alloy is weldable. Consult the supplier for procedures.
