Aging Procedure

Not applicable to this alloy.

Annealing Procedure

Anneal at 1500 F and slow cool in the furnace at a rate of 25 F per hour or less.

Applications

Used for impact resistant tools such as hammers, chisels, rivet sets.

Cold Workability

S6 may be cold worked in the annealed condition by conventional methods.

Forgeability

Forge at 2000 F down to 1650 F. Do not forge below 1600 F.

Formability

Forming characteristics in the annealed condition are good.

Hardening Procedure

See "Heat Treating" and "Tempering".

Heat Treatability

Slowly preheat to 1400 F and then raise the temperature to 1700 F. Hold parts at 1700 F for 10 to 30 minutes and then oil quench.

Hot Workability

See "Forging".

Machinability

This alloy has reasonably good machinability with a rating of 85% that of the W group water hardening simple alloy tool steels.

Principle Design Features

This alloy is one of the Shock Resisting tool steel type with a higher (2.25%) silicon content for improved hardenability.

Tempering Procedure

Tempering is done at 400 to 600 F for Rockwell C of 56 - 54.

Weldability

The alloy may be welded, but the high silicon content may require special precautions. Consult the alloy supplier.
