Aging Procedure

Not applicable to this alloy

Annealing Procedure

Anneal at 1625 F and slow cool at a maximum of 40 F per hour in the furnace.

Applications

Generally used as cutting tools, broaches and cold extrusion punches.

Cold Workability

In the annealed condition the alloy may be cold worked by conventional methods.

Forgeability

Forge at 2100 F down to 1775 F. Do not forge below 1750 F.

Formability

The alloy has good ductility in the annealed condition and may be formed by conventional means.

Hardening Procedure

See "Heat Treating" and "Tempering".

Heat Treatability

Preheat to 1550 F and then heat rapidly to 2325 F. Hold parts for 2 to 5 minutes at 2325 F and then quench in oil, salt bath or air.

Hot Workability

See "Forging".

Machinability

Machinability of T4 is only fair. It ranks as 55% that of the W group water hardening simple tool steels.

Other Comments

This alloy hardens well but is seldom used in large sections over 3" thick or diameter.

Principle Design Features

This alloy is a High Speed, tungsten type tool steel. It is a deep hardening alloy capable of Rockwell C 64 hardness.

Tempering Procedure

Temper at 1000 to 1100 F for Rockwell C of 66 to 62.

Weldability

The alloy may be welded but has a high tungsten content. Consult the alloy supplier for information relative to welding methods.
